Our natural condition finds us wanting to distance ourselves from God. We can not trust Him. We refuse to believe that He either knows, or intends, what is best for us. Or perhaps we believe His resources are limited. The younger “prodigal” son in this parable of Jesus takes his inheritance and chooses his own path, and soon runs dry, failing catastrophically. Repentance comes when the Holy Spirit allows us to look soberly at our lives and see how much of a mess we have made, and how desperately we need to be reunited with our heavenly father, who made us for Himself. For the prodigal, to “come to himself” as Jesus put it, was not a noble impulse, but an act of desperation. Nor, if we come to our senses, is this something for which we should be praised, or by which we should think we earn our right to be accepted by God. We must not think like the older brother in Jesus’ story. In this parable, though, how wonderful it is to see a God whose heart overflows to those who are wretched – how he runs to make up the distance between those who have turned their back on their sin, and their faces towards their heavenly father.
