The book of Ecclesiastes is a dramatic discourse from a character called the Teacher. He reflects on how life lived “under the sun” without reference to God is ultimately meaningless and arbitrary. We may carve out our living and perhaps find our pleasures in our time, but they will all fade under the sun, and satisfaction will elude us. God has planted eternity in our hearts. Some regard this as an honest, even cynical glimpse of existential reality, as though a dose of that should help humble us and deflate our balloon of optimism – certainly it should, if we are placing our hope in anything other than God. The crucial message of scripture is that God has not abandoned us to life under the sun, and indeed, comes Himself into our world to point us to Himself, as our ultimate, unshakeable Hope.
